Partner towns

Blomberg means openness to the world and internationality

Within the framework of town twinning, many of the citizens of Blomberg maintain intensive exchanges with people in Papendrecht in the Netherlands, in the Berlin district of Reinickendorf, the town of Oschatz in Saxony and the French city of Lieusaint.

Blomberg’s oldest town partnership is with the Dutch city of Papendrecht. Inspired by the Dutch garrison in Blomberg and following extensive contact, the first partnership was established in 1975. This was followed by the partnership with the Berlin district of Reinickendorf while Berlin was still a divided city as a result of the of the east-west conflict. Immediately after reunification, in the summer of 1990, the document partnering Blomberg with Oschatz in Saxony was signed in the town hall. This meant that the intensive contacts that had already existed, especially in the area of sport, were directed in the form of a town partnership. The most recent partnership is with the French city of Lieusaint near Paris. This developed from intensive private contacts and received official recognition in 2009.

The active formation of these town partnerships is a constant and rewarding task. Many personal friendships have developed from mutual exchange over the course of time between private individuals, associations and interest groups, which make an important contribution to mutual understanding and esteem in the “common house” of Europe.
